"And do as adversaries do in law, strive mightily, but eat and drink as friends." – Shakespeare and Legal ethics in an evolving age of divisive rhetoric.

Those iconic words from Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew” could not be more relevant than they are today! Joins us for a conversation about our duty of civility and how Shakespeare can help us understand and rise above today’s Machiavellian monologues. The ends do not justify the meanness!

The Machines are Coming: the Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Automation on Legal Services

AI and automation in legal services has everybody talking, but few probably understand the impact they are likely to have on our industry. Machines can be utilized today to complete many time-consuming tasks, such as data collecting and analytics, research and fact verification, document creation, review and redlining, and more. This session will focus on the impact this transformation will likely have on the structure and focus of both law firms and legal departments, as well as on the new roles and skills that will be needed in this new “digital age”.

Authentic Leadership: Servant Leader First . . . Professional Second.

Based on my combined 35 years of leadership experience in the Marine Corps and in the business world, I’ve come to the inescapable conclusion that servant leadership is the heart of authentic leadership. We are all called to lead in our own lives, across the spectrum of our lives. We can either answer that call, or turn our back on it. When we choose to lead, we are filling a gap that no one else can fill. To lead authentically, we must first define ourselves as servant leaders, serving our teammates, our teams, and our organizations, as human beings and as professionals, in the direction of our shared mission. I will share my conclusions and place a personal challenge in front of those who attend.

Report of the National Association of Corporate Directors Blue Ribbon Commission on Adaptive Governance Board Oversight of Disrupted Risks.

Disruptive risks can be not only unknown, but unknowable unknowns-a Black Swan event is something that falls outside the realm of regular knowable expectations. Events that cannot be predicted or planned for. Things we do not know that we do not know. But, disruptive events can also be “known knowns” – White Elephants – something that is known but ignored, not seen or based on probability/severity analysis, not addressed or able to be addressed because of the cost of mitigation. Finally, disruptive risks can be “know unknowns” or a combination of Black Swan and White elephant events – Grey Rhinos. In the current operating environment characterized by the acronym VUCA (Volatility, uncertainty, complexity and Ambiguity) Boards must do a better job of assessing disruptive risks.
