It’s true. If you fail to plan, then plan to fail. Strategic planning is a crucial element of successful law department operations. Having smart lawyers is not enough. You must be able to continuously re-engineer the Legal Department to ensure it is customer focused, customer oriented and market driven. This presentation will explore ways to ensure the legal department is operating to ensure it remains a strategic and valued partner.
Lois Elizabeth Bingham, Esq. is Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary and Compliance Officer for Yazaki North America, Inc., the Americas headquarters for affiliated companies of Japan-based Yazaki Corporation. Yazaki is a global leader in the research, development and delivery of vehicle power and data solutions for automotive applications such as wire harnesses, power distribution and control products, connectors, driver information systems, sensors, and hybrid and electric vehicle products. At Yazaki, she oversees the provision of legal services, corporate compliance and corporate governance for Yazaki’s affiliated companies and more than 70,000 employees located within North and Central America.
A native of Detroit, Michigan, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University School of Law.
Ms. Bingham is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, the National Bar Association, the Straker Bar Association, the Wolverine Bar Association, the Association of Corporate Counsel and Corporate Counsel for Women of Color. She was the first African-American woman to serve as Chair of the State Bar of Michigan’s International Law Section. She was recently appointed by the America Bar Association’s Commission on Women to serve on the Bias Interrupters Working Group.
She has served on the Board of Directors of many community organizations, such as The Black United Fund of Michigan and Minerva Education and Development Foundation, where she served as Chair and President. Currently, Ms. Bingham is a member of the Board of Directors of Just the Beginning - A Pipeline Organization, the Chicago-based legal pipeline organization focused on middle and high school students. Prior to joining JTB, she served as Chair of the Board for Legal Aid and Defenders Association of Michigan. A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she is the President of the Detroit Alumnae Chapter.
Ms. Bingham has been a featured speaker for a number of organizations including Inforum, the National Bar Association, the State Bar of Michigan, and the World Trade Center Detroit/Windsor Association. Recognized for her leadership, she received the Starker Bar Association’s 2016 Trailblazer Award, the 2015 Crain’s Detroit Business General Counsel and In-House Counsel Award for Private Company, Revenue Over $1 Billion, and her law department was selected as one of the Association of Corporate Counsel’s 2015 Value Champions.
In addition, she was featured in the April/May 2016 edition of the Minority Corporate Counsel Association’s Diversity and the Bar, the Fall 2015 edition of Modern Counsel, the 2013 edition of DRIVEN: A Tribute to African-American Achievement in the Automotive Industry and recognized in 2012 as one of Michigan Chronicle’s Women of Excellence honorees.
