This presentation focuses on the innovation challenges and opportunities presented by transforming the culture in a globally dispersed team. It will examine the transformation journey of the legal department of Telstra, a 100+-year-old telecommunications and technology company headquartered in Australia with legal teams in Australia, Asia, the United Kingdom and the United States.
In 2016, Telstra was named the most innovative in-house legal team in Asia-Pacific by The Financial Times. In 2017, the Telstra legal team received awards from the Association of Corporate Counsel and the International Legal Technology Association and is currently the subject of a Harvard Law School case study. The presentation will look at how Telstra achieved this, including using design thinking to cut an estimated 40,000 hours from its legal team’s annual workload. It will also provide advice on how to maneuver through conflicting laws, cultures and time zones to make innovation meaningful on a global scale.
Amy Rosen is the US General Counsel and Country Managing Director for Telstra, Australia’s leading telecommunications and technology company with an international presence spanning over 20 countries. She has been practicing law for over 25 years, starting her career as an M&A lawyer at the New York law firm, Debevoise & Plimpton, before moving to AT&T in 1994. At AT&T, Amy supported a variety of the new internet-service based businesses, along with related businesses and partnerships in Latin America and Asia. In 2003, Amy moved to Telstra as its US General Counsel and US Head of HR.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Amy received her J.D. from Columbia University Law School where she was executive editor of the Columbia Journal of Law and Social Problems.
